Development of a virtual journalism mentorship programme for exit level undergraduate students: In 2020 the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic meant that some of our third-year students could not be placed in industry for their internships due to newsrooms closing down. The internship programme is an essential means through which our students hone their practical skills. It is also an opportunity for them to be mentored by practising journalists. As a means of ensuring that they didn't miss out on these critical learnings, together with the Media Department's Work Integrated Learning Co-ordinator, I developed a mentorship programme that connected our final year students with practising journalists. The students were given projects to undertake, and the mentoring journalists mentored them through these in a similar way to what would have happened in a newsroom.
